The random flag generator draws from 44 national flags, each shown with its country name. The name is included because flag emoji are unreadable on their own for most people. Recognising a flag out of context is a specialist skill, and an unlabelled draw teaches nobody anything.
How it works
Flag emoji are not single characters. Each is a pair of regional indicator symbols spelling the ISO 3166-1 country code, which the renderer substitutes for a flag image if it recognises the pair.
- The 🇯🇵 flag is the two regional indicators for J and P, side by side.
- A device that does not support flag emoji shows those two letters instead, which is why some Windows versions display country codes rather than flags.
- The 44 countries span every inhabited continent, weighted for geographic spread rather than population.

Frequently asked questions
Why do flags show as two letters on some devices?
Because a flag emoji is a pair of regional indicator symbols, not a single character. Windows has historically not shipped flag artwork, so it renders the underlying letters. 🇯🇵 appears as "JP". The characters are correct; the font has no picture for them.
Why only 44 countries?
There are around 195 recognised sovereign states, and a list of all of them would be mostly countries a general audience cannot place. These 44 span every inhabited continent and are recognisable enough to work as quiz material.
Are disputed or non-sovereign flags included?
No. The list holds only widely recognised sovereign states, which keeps the tool clear of territorial disputes it has no business adjudicating.
