Incorrect Quotes Generator
Comma-separated. Leave blank to use A, B, C, D.
:
The incorrect quotes generator produces short comedic exchanges in the format fandom communities use, a numbered or named speaker per line, two to four lines, ending on a punchline. Enter your own character names and they replace the default A, B, C and D labels.
How it works
The format has a fixed shape, which is what makes it recognisable. A straight line, a response that undercuts it, and often a third line that lands the joke.
- A scene is drawn from ten written exchanges, each two to four lines long.
- Speaker labels are assigned in order to the names you supply, comma-separated.
- If you supply fewer names than the scene has lines, the names cycle rather than running out.
- With no names supplied, the scene uses A, B, C and D.
Examples
With default labels
Names
(blank)
Result
A: I have a plan. B: Is it a good plan? C: It is *a* plan.
Three lines, three labels. The asterisks are the community convention for emphasis, since the format originated on platforms without rich text.
With two names for a three-line scene
Names
Rowan, Sable
Result
Rowan: Is that blood? Sable: Probably. Rowan: Whose?
Two names across three lines means the first name cycles back for the third, which reads naturally because the format is usually a two-hander anyway.
Frequently asked questions
Why are the exchanges written rather than randomly assembled?
Because comic timing does not survive random assembly. A punchline has to answer the specific line before it, and mixing and matching lines from different exchanges produces text that has the shape of a joke without being one.
What happens if I enter more names than the scene has lines?
The extra names are unused for that scene. Draw again and a longer exchange may use them, scenes vary from two to four lines.
What do the asterisks around a word mean?
Emphasis. The format grew up on platforms without italics, so asterisks became the convention and stuck even where formatting is now available. Leave them in if you are posting somewhere that reads as plain text.
