The surname generator draws from 30 last names chosen to span several naming traditions rather than one. Marchetti, Okonkwo, Vasquez and Winterbourne sit in the same list. That spread matters when the names are being used as test data, because a list drawn from one tradition hides bugs in name handling.

How it works

The list mixes structural types deliberately, because different surname structures break different code.

  • Single-word English: Abbott, Hartley, Ingram, Larkin, Thorne, Quill.
  • Compound English: Blackwood, Nightingale, Ravenscroft, Winterbourne, Lockhart.
  • Italian, Spanish and Irish: Marchetti, Vasquez, Zeledon, Gallagher, Halloran.
  • Igbo: Okonkwo.

Length ranges from five characters (Quill) to thirteen (Winterbourne), which is a useful range for checking column widths and truncation.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the surname generator mix naming traditions?

Because test data drawn from a single tradition all looks alike, which hides real bugs. Okonkwo, Vasquez and Winterbourne exercise different lengths and character patterns than a list of English surnames would.

What is the longest and shortest surname in the list?

Quill at five characters and Winterbourne at thirteen. That range is deliberate. It is enough to expose truncation in fixed-width columns and layouts.

Can I combine these with first names?

Yes. The random name generator does exactly that, pairing these 30 surnames with 84 first names for 2,520 combinations.
